Blackhill

From UK Housing Wiki

Blackhill is a small housing estate in north east Glasgow. It lies between Riddrie, Provanmill. The scheme was created under the Slum Clearance Act of 1935 and was built on a golf course which was moved eastwards to accomodate Blackhill. Most of the housing was designated 'Rehousing' - the lowest grade of council housing - intended for those cleared from Glasgow's iner city slums. These buildings were three-storey, slate-roofed tenements built of reconstituted stone. The eastern side of Blackhill was designated 'Intermediate' - a grade up from 'Rehousing' - and housing was of the cottage flat-type with front and rear gardens and a measure of landscaping in the streets. 'Rehousing' areas cost £250 per house to build, while 'Intermediate' areas cost £1000. Blackhill, over the years has gathered a terrible name for crime and has a notorious reputation for being one of the most dangerous areas in the city. Demolition has already been undertaken on the tenements in West Blackhill and Craiglandmuir Street, Maryston Street and parts of Hogganfield Street, Maxwelton Street, Bargeddie Street and Queenslie Street lie empty as wasteland. Some of the cottage flats on the eastern side have recieved much needed investment.
