Red Road
From UK Housing Wiki
The Red Road area of Glasgow is famed for its tower blocks which when built were the tallest residential buildings in Europe. They are in a prominent location to the north of the city centre, overlooking the M8 Motorway.
Approved in 1962, they were designed by Sam Bunton & Associates. They were built in 1969 by the Glasgow City Council. The red, blue or ochre cladding was added in 1982. The blocks were made from asbestos panels (now replaced) on a steel frame. It took seven years to complete, and houses the same number of people as a small town on its 8.7 hectare site. It was declared unfit for habitation in 1980 and converted into student and executive accommodation, and a YMCA.
There are in total eight blocks varying in height from 74.10 metres in height to 89.00 metres in height. In total, there are 720 flats in the all tower blocks and at it's peak, housed approximately 1500 people.
