Urban decay is the social and physical deterioration of urban areas in cities and towns. This is commonly attributed to inner city postwar housing estates. Areas suffering from urban decay suffer from high levels of crime and social unrest. Vandalism can be common in such areas. Poor maintenance of buildings leads to the deterioration of structures and various programmes by local authorities and housing associations to address these problems have resulted in the demolition of vast estates.
